Program Notes:
This was a project that was pitched to me before I began my first semester of graduate studies at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I had expressed interest in writing for large ensembles in my interviews for the school an would later receive an e-mail about an opportunity to write a concertino for four flutes and wind band. While I had never written a concerto or concertino before, I saw it as a great opportunity to work with the new faculty and students at UNCG.
The piece begins with the soloist flutter tonguing the main motive of the piece, a short four note motif. The first section is cheerful and playful, while the middle section is more enigmatic. The middle section features asymmetric meters and shifting tonal centers and for a brief moment, the bells chime the main motif in a moment of respite. The solo flutes then enter with a flicker of air. The final section is a playful return to the opening material with a more floaty character, concluding with a jubilant coda.
